Cov-Eid. (Or atleast how it should have been.)

Image
I woke up to the gentle sound of my Mum calling up the stairs. “Shaymaaa….! Shayma…? Wake up, we need to get ready for Eid namaaz .” Her voice a brilliant balance of being quiet enough, acknowledging that people in the house were still asleep and the birds tweeting outside was the only sound you could hear, but also firm enough to ensure that I didn’t just roll over and go back to sleep again. Eid morning always held the same atmosphere; the sound of a random police siren wailing in the far distance, the clanking of a metal spoon against an Indian pot, ladling litres of creamy sev- milk, steam rising and making the windows go cloudy, as my Mum crushed vermicelli and sprinkled it into the potion along with chopped almonds and pistachios. Her magic concoction bubbling away temptingly. The smell of cardamom, cinnamon and sugar swirling around our kitchen, luring my groggy-eyed, Albert-Einstein-haired self into the kitchen and leading me, slowly…slowly… Another loud CLANK! ...

Sun, Sea and Samosas. Nostalgia at Skeggy :)

Image
No matter how old you are, everyone turns into a child at Skeggy. Are you even British if you haven't spent whiling away your Summers at the famous beach? This past weekend, it was my turn to become a child when my Mum said "Right! We're off to Skeggy this weekend!" I'm surprised she didn't add the famous masala ( spices )  to it! Obviously, we spent a good 15 minutes trawling along in the car park, because what would a trip to Skeggy be without that?? I can't really remember Skeggy from my ...

Like every year, De Montfort Hall host a pantomime based on either a fairy-tale or a classic children's tale. And this year was no different. What with the success of he live-action re-make, it was a no-brainer that the pantomime would be Beauty and the Beast.  Sam Bailey returned this year as a narrator/good fairy along with Sarah Accomando (Beauty), BBC Radio Leicester's Martin Ballard, (Dame) and Richard McCourt from Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow. CBBC's (remember? 90s generation, I'm looking at you) Dick from Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow meant that the children were playing a game of BOGIES! with enthusiasm every time he made an appearance, and the pie-splats definitely allowed the children to put their silly hats on. It seems that no expense was spared on the props. Varied, bright and attractive, it was a visual treat for the young audience. Perhaps includ...
